The soprano and the mezzo

The Soprano & The Mezzo – An Memorable Concert Experience

Look forward to a unique musical evening with two of Denmark’s leading voices in musical theatre, Isabel Schwartzbach and Frederikke Vedel.

Throughout their careers they have noticed a pattern: sopranos are usually cast to marry the prince, while mezzos tend to meet a tragic fate — like poor Éponine in Les Misérables, dying in the rain. With this playful contrast as a starting point, they invite the audience on a journey through some of musical theatre’s greatest hits, interwoven with anecdotes from backstage life.

Together, the two singers cover an impressive range of roles — from the powerful green witch Elphaba in Wicked to classics such as The Sound of Music — all brought to life under the musical direction of conductor and pianist Thomas Jaque.

About the artists

Frederikke Vedel has an extensive list of leading roles in iconic musicals such as Beauty and the Beast, American Idiot, Mamma Mia and Hurra for de Blå Husarer. Her expressive musicality and highly versatile vocal range — spanning jazz, folk, pop, soul and classical — have made her a sought-after soloist with top musicians including Benjamin Koppel, Niels J.P., Erann DD, Niels Lan Doky and Randy Brecker, as well as with major orchestras such as Promenadeorkestret, the Danish regional orchestras, Danmarks Underholdningsorkester and Tivoli Late Night Orchestra. In 2023 she appeared as guest soloist on Stig Rossen’s major Christmas tour. Frederikke is also a songwriter and appears on several releases and albums.

Isabel Schwartzbach, with a background in classical vocal training combined with acting studies at the Stella Adler Studio in New York, has delivered critically acclaimed performances in roles such as Maria in West Side Story, Maria in The Sound of Music and Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera. Her crystal-clear soprano and charming stage presence have made her a favourite on stages across Denmark and a sought-after soloist with the country’s leading orchestras. On television, she has appeared as a soloist at P3 Guld alongside Kidd, Tobias Rahim and Burhan G, and has performed on TV2’s Knæk Cancer and Go’ Morgen Danmark. Isabel has also provided Danish speaking and singing voices for several characters in Disney and Netflix productions.

Thomas Jaque is widely known as Stig Rossen’s regular conductor and pianist, particularly on the annual Christmas tour. He has served as musical director and pianist on numerous musicals including Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera and Chess, and for many years was part of the orchestra and musical leadership of Cirkusrevyen. He has worked with the Danish symphony orchestras on numerous occasions, including DR Symfoniorkestret’s production of West Side Story at the Ledreborg Castle Concert. Thomas has also performed for Her Majesty Queen Margrethe and has contributed to a range of film and TV productions (Dirch, Majoren, etc.) as well as many studio recordings.
