Actress and soprano Isabel Schwartzbach trained at the Danish National Academy of Music with a major in classical voice and continued her studies with coloratura soprano Louise Fribo. She later completed the three-year Conservatory Program at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York.
The combination of her classically trained soprano, her ability to move naturally into the spoken and expressive qualities of musical theatre, and her actor’s training and depth in character building, has made Schwartzbach one of Denmark’s most sought-after musical sopranos.
Schwartzbach most recently starred as Maria in The Sound of Music at The New Theatre, Copenhagen (2025). The production received highly positive reviews, with her performance noted for both vocal and dramatic excellence. One critic wrote that “Schwartzbach outshines everything and everyone,” calling her “the definitive Maria for a new generation.”
Her previous roles include Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, Maria in West Side Story, Cosette in Les Misérables, and Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof — a performance for which she received Journalist Inge Dam’s Award for young, promising actors — as well as Violetta in Pretty Woman – The Musical on national tour.
“Isabel Schwartzbach delivers a captivating performance as Maria — the kind of portrayal one hopes for but can never be certain to receive - yet here it is. Her voice is exquisitely sensitive, pure, and radiant. Isabel Schwartzbach’s Maria outshines everything and everyone.”
“She has a striking credibility ... The profound depth in her [character] gives the audience a hope that even the final Devil’s Triad can’t fight off”
“Isabel Schwartzbach, who plays the daughter Hodel, impresses greatly with a world-class singing voice”
